RECENT MUSEUM ACQUISITION: TENNANT CREEK BRIO

ART GALLERY OF NEW SOUTH WALES

Cassandra Bird is pleased to announce that the Tennant Creek Brio's UAP: Unidentified (Ab)original Phenomenon (2024) is now part of the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.

First presented at ACCA in 2024 as part of a solo exhibition by the Tennant Creek Brio, curated by Max Delany, the work was subsequently selected in 2025 for Installation Contemporary at Sydney Contemporary, curated by José Da Silva, Director of UNSW Galleries.

UAP. Unidentifed (Ab)original Phenomenon is a sculpture that takes the form of an Australian gothic guardian angel or petrochemical effigy. The work exemplifies the Brio's method of collage, assemblage and creative creolisation with found objects and materials. It also highlights a critique of invasion, colonial extraction, capitalism and the subsequent social, cultural and political complexities and negotiations that stem from these.

This significant institutional acquisition affirms the critical and material force of Tennant Creek Brio’s practice within national and international contemporary discourses.
