We are delighted to share that Tina Havelock Stevens has been selected for the second annual co-commission by the Art Gallery of New South Wales and Artspace. This collaborative initiative supports an artist or collective from Artspace’s Studio Program to create a new work for the Art Gallery’s Contemporary Projects series, developed in close dialogue with curators from both institutions.
Tina Havelock Stevens: !! channels visceral, unspoken responses to the complexities of our time. Rooted in her enduring interest in the social and environmental rhythms that shape life and place, the exhibition combines sculptural installation with a newly improvised percussive soundscape, recorded in the Art Gallery’s monumental Tank space.
With a background in documentary filmmaking and post-punk music, Havelock Stevens’ practice is grounded in observation and improvisation. Her works often begin with the drum kit—used not only as an instrument but also as a sculptural form and spatial activator.
Guided by this intuitive methodology, she remains acutely responsive to both the physical landscapes we move through and the psychological frameworks we inhabit. Whether through public installations, live performances, or gallery exhibitions like this one, Havelock Stevens creates opportunities for shared, momentary connection—between viewers, the site, and the shifting tensions of the world around us.
