ABOUT
Janet Laurence creates poetic, immersive worlds that illuminate the fragility of nature and our profound entanglement with the living world
JANET LAURENCE is one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists. For more than four decades, her practice has explored the fragile interconnection of all living things, bringing art, science and ecology into poetic dialogue. Across photography, sculpture, video and immersive installation, Laurence considers nature as both a site of vulnerability and regeneration, asking how we might restore our relationship with the living world.
Working across museum, architectural and landscape contexts, Laurence creates environments that evoke processes of transformation, memory and loss. Her work is driven by a profound ecological consciousness, inviting intimate encounters with plants, minerals, animals and other life forms while reflecting on the increasingly precarious state of the natural world.
Laurence has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and internationally. Major presentations include Janet Laurence: After Nature, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney (2019); The Entangled Garden of Plant Memory, Yu Hsiu Museum, Taiwan (2020); Deep Breathing: Resuscitation for the Reef, Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris (2015); the 13th Cuenca Biennial, Ecuador (2016); and the Biennale of Sydney (1992, 2010).
Significant public works include The Edge of the Trees with Fiona Foley, Museum of Sydney (1994); In the Shadow, Sydney Olympic Park (2000); The Australian War Memorial, Hyde Park, London (2003); and Elixir, Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial, Japan (2006).
Laurence is a recipient of Rockefeller and Churchill Fellowships, and her work is held in major collections including the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Victoria, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Queensland Art Gallery and Art Gallery of South Australia.
